Shading
We identify shaded and highly heat-exposed areas. This enables cities to assess where existing shading already provides relief and where additional shading measures would be most effective.
Shading Maps
The shading maps show the time-of-day shadow cast by buildings and trees as a function of the sun’s position. They are based on high-resolution digital surface and terrain models. For each time step, the geometric shadow is computed and aggregated into metrics such as per-pixel shadow fraction. This makes it possible to quantify and compare the degree of shading across an area over the course of the day.
The maps support heat-mitigation planning and the improvement of outdoor comfort. They help identify areas where measures such as additional trees, pergolas, or shade sails can be prioritized—e.g., on playgrounds, school and daycare yards, and at facilities for older residents. In green and streetscape planning, they support selecting sites for new plantings and enable the assessment of shading along pedestrian and bicycle routes as well as at public transport stops.
